We had to run to town today to get the all clear of my final surgery from my doctor.  Then Melanie needed to go get a therapeutic massage for her back issues, hope that clears up soon.  I think we are almost good to go right now.  In about 1 month we will go pick up our bike in Colombia and meander south, with our final destination of Uruguay.  There we will leave our bike because we can receive a one year TIP.

While Melanie is receiving her massage, I parked in downtown Dothan and found a really cool coffee shop, the Bird and Bean Coffee House.  The coffee shop seems really busy as there are singles at most tables meant for four people.  All the people have either headphones or ear pods on, connected to a computer and their phones.  I think of the differences between this really great coffee shop and all the other coffee shops I’ve been in around the world.  Here, everyone is connected to something other than being here.  It makes me wonder, are people really connected, or are they all really disconnected from life.  When I was in Vietnam I sat at an outside coffee shop.  All the tables were filled with people, all chatting to each other.  I was approached and had a couple really nice conversations while I sat there.  As I sit here no one even glances up from the glowing screen that keeps them (dis)connected.

I’m really looking forward to another long ride that will take maybe a year, take me to many new countries and cultures, and connections around the world.

Cheers,
