Today was the start of Horizons Unlimited Ecuador. Or so we thought. As Melanie grabbed an UBER, I hopped on the bike for the 60 km trip. The 6th Horizons Unlimited Ecuador was being held at Sierra Alisos Hotel de Campo. The owner of the resort and organizer of the event was Raul Guarderas. He has a fantastic place in a privileged location on the Avenue of Volcanoes. The architecture is typical of the area. Rounded dark logs with curved white adobe inside and out. In the main room a fireplace took a prominent place on one wall. On an adjoining wall were photos of generations of the family. This large estate has been passed down through several generations.

As I entered the estate, the man at the entrance manually raised the wooden gate. The gate had a large stone attached to the short end for a counter balance. The ride to the house was along a narrow drive with rocks. It was almost like broken cobblestones along the 2 1/2 km route. As I pulled onto the main drive Raul was ready with his camera marking the entrance of the first arrival. I was first because I was a day early. OOPS!! Raul was very accommodating and gave us our room early. The meals were served with tender beef from the estate. And excellent red wine. After a tour of the property we just relaxed and visited with another couple that had also arrived early.

Volcano Cotopaxi

It was a great three days of visiting with friends, old and new. We met some couples at the start of their big trip. Carl and Isabel are from the UK, aka Life 2 On Tour. Simona and Stefan are from Germany, aka Rock n’ Ride. Angela and Michael are from Canada, aka Twonie Project. So many interesting people and stories. In the back of the resort Raul had constructed an enormous yurt. This had been built for the first HU Ecuador in 29 days. At night we all gathered around the fireplace while Stefan entertained us on a guitar. My new carbon fiber Enya tenor ukulele even came out to join in for a bit.

All too quickly the gathering was finished and we all headed separate ways. A big shout out to Dan and Carrie, Canadians full timing in Cuenca, for transporting Melanie back to Quito. Getting into the doctor’s office was confusing. We decided to fly Melanie to Cuenca to see a doctor. She also needed to get an MRI.

More about Ecuador in the next post. We may have found a new place to live.

Cheers,
