The plans for 2023 are finally coming together.

Tickets have been purchased for Colombia, South America for January and February. This will be our sixth continent and 73rd country. I am now actively looking for a motorcycle that will carry us through South America over the next three years, and possibly longer, if we decide to stay in Colombia. What kind of motorcycle do we want? I am thinking of a mid-size, 650-800. Suzuki DL’s and DR’s are extremely popular, as are the Kawasaki KLR and BMW’s. The process to own a motorcycle in Colombia takes about a week if things go well.

We will then return to the US to see family and get the house in order, then off to Jakarta, on the island of Java in Indonesia, for April and May. I have already purchased a bike from a guy from Hong Kong that has ridden the bike around Indonesia. It is an Indian made Bajaj Pulsar 220, kitted out with Jessie panniers. We will be riding a counter clockwise route, ending in Borneo before ferrying back to Java. We will be visiting the the Komodo dragons and Orangutans. Plus, maybe another first. Melanie may be wanting to pilot her own scooter somewhere along the ride. Stay tuned…

From Indonesia we will be reunited with “Yellow Donkey” our faithful 2003 VStrom 1000 in Lisbon, Portugal. We have no idea where we will be going, only west, probably to Eastern Europe again, or maybe just having fun in the Alps and Dolomites. You can never have enough time there. The beginning of September will find us at the popular, and my personal favorite, Overland Event in Oxford England. After we will ride around the UK and possibly hire a narrow boat to cruise the canal systems of Wales for a week. It would be fun if we could get a couple other travelers to join us for this. The prospect of slowly cruising the countryside and docking alongside a pub in the evening is very appealing.

So much to do and see. We are excited for the new places we will be seeing, the new friends we will be making and, of course, the old friends we will be able to see again.

Cheers to making the most of life and patchwork RTW travel,

Phew, my head is spinning with all your plans! South America sounds exciting and all the rest. Looks like Morrocco is not on the list. Oh well, another time. We are about to leave Portugal Nov 2 to head home. Our BMW will be stored here in Tavira waiting for a spring trip to Morrocco. Let’s hope the world is not upside down then!!
