Those of you that know me know I travel with my ukulele. I do this for my own enjoyment, occasionally heading to the enjoyment of others around me. At one point this was my retirement plan. To travel the world on my motorcycle, playing my ukulele for tips in hopes I would stop playing.

We were riding from Georgia, the country, not the state, into Turkey. When we got to our campground I noticed the ukulele had slipped from its high mount to right in front of the muffler exhaust. The carrying bag had partially melted. Fearing the worst, I opened him the bag to find the strings and neck fret all had melted into one nasty mess. I carried an extra set of strings with me, but where to find a fret for a soprano ukulele. Walking around the campground I came across a piece of hardwood. The light bulb came on, and my pocket knife came out. Sitting at the picnic table and whittling away I soon carved a makeshift upper fret into the wood. Using my boot glue, I glued the fret into place on the upper neck of the ukulele and restrung the instrument.
The next day I gave it a test and, Viola!, it worked.

I could now continue the trip, playing my ukulele while disturbing the silence that surrounded us. Happy strumming.

Cheers,
