The ferry left an hour late so we didn’t end up in our cabin until 1am. After a quick shower, we hit the sack, exhausted. Having an inside cabin without light, an alarm was set to ensure we wouldn’t oversleep and have to rush in the morning.
Riding off the ferry and onto the main road was simple enough. There were just so many people out and about on holiday. The beaches were JAMMED! It was Like the CoVID gates had just been opened and the virus was gone.
Finding a campground on the beach in Sardinia was easy as there are so many. Setting up in a shaded area in the bushes we then took a walk over a hill to a beautiful beach with some of the clearest water I have ever seen. All the water surrounding these two islands is pristine, you can look through the waves. Tonight was to be a big night for Italy as they were playing the UK for the football championship. The bar and restaurant would be packed, but we were told we could join in if we brought our own chairs. Showing up a little early the patrons were busy keeping the flow of alcohol up and painting their faces in Green, White and Red, the colors of the Italian flag. We had a quick bite while the UK scored within 1 minute. You could have heard a pin drop. Italy tied to score and the game went into a shootout, with Italy being victorious. I would have believed the UK could’ve heard them with the cheers.
The next morning we rode up to the ferry and over to Corsica. The idea was to ride Corsica, ride back to Sardinia and on to Italy, Greece and Bulgaria. Plans changed as we saw the temperatures in southern Italy and Greece hovering around the triple digits numbers. We decided to head to the mountains of northern Italy, the Dolamites, instead and ride to Bulgaria via mountains and cooler weather. Corsica was also very busy with bumper to bumper, slow moving tourist traffic.and we got off the coast as soon as possible, to the mountains, the second-gear mountains. These mountains weren’t typical of the passes in Europe. The roads twisted back and forth endlessly. It got really rather monotonous. At one of the highest peaks in the middle of the island, at 2000 meters, we found a wonderful campsite with the peak of the mountain right behind us. We stayed a couple nights here to rest and do a couple repairs on the Yellow Donkey. They had the most wonderful pizza here and good cold beer. On the morning of the second day we were packing in a fine mountain mist when we turned around and saw the most perfect rainbow, positioned perfectly over the peak of the mountain.
After riding for ten minutes we rode out the cloud and into sunshine and increasing temperatures. We twisted and turned off the mountain and onto the coast to camp another night on the beach before catching the ferry for the mainland the next morning.
Now here is when it got ridiculous. The campground advertised a pool so we put on our bathing suits and headed to the pool. Now, remember this is a French island. That should clue you in as to their normal. At the gate we are told that Melanie has a proper bathing suit on, but that I didn’t have one on. Melanie says that this IS his bathing suit. NOPE!! I guess the French want to totally SEE the beans and weiners, all tied up in a tight little package called a hammock. A friend, lets call him Ed, told me to put my underwear on backwards, give myself a proper wedgie and I would be good to go. The French again, a pain in my arse and that’s all I will say about that.
Cheers, and happy corn dogs,
